LPGA Star Natalie Gulbis Headlines Garden State Tour Pro Challenge Presented by Northeast Lock at Shackamaxon Country Club, Sept. 25

Scotch Plains, N.J. (July 25, 2013)—Have you ever dreamed of playing head-to-head against a professional golfer in front of a gallery of enthusiastic fans? On Sept. 25, 2013, Shackamaxon Country Club will host the second annual Garden State Tour Pro Challenge presented by Northeast Lock. This charitable event will feature six lucky amateur qualifiers (and the teammate of their choice) golfing against LPGA sensation Natalie Gulbis and her New Jersey PGA Tour professional teammate in a series of three-hole matches on the club’s A.W. Tillinghast-designed course.

The “Challenge” will benefit the New Jersey Golf Foundation, the charitable arm of the New Jersey section of the PGA. The organization’s mission is to grow the game of golf in New Jersey and to provide access to the game specifically to youth throughout the Garden State.

Qualifying tournaments are currently taking place at private and public clubs around the state. The entry fee is $20. For more information on how to enter one of the remaining qualifiers, contact Mr. Chris Hunt of The New Jersey Golf Foundation at (732) 465-1212.

All the clubs’ winners in five categories (Ladies Net, Ladies Gross, Men’s Gross, Men’s Net and Men’s Senior Gross) will compete in one of two qualifying rounds at Forsgate Country Club on Sept. 12 or Sept. 15. The winners in each category will choose an amateur partner and advance to face Natalie Gublis and her PGA partner on Sept. 25 at Shackamaxon.

Natalie Gulbis is an LPGA star, entrepreneur, model, actress and one of the most recognizable athletes in the world. Gulbis turned pro at the young age of 18, and her first professional win came at the 2007 Evian Masters in France. She has recorded 36, top-10 finishes in her career and has played on three victorious U.S. Solheim Cup teams—2005, 2007, and 2009. In addition to her stellar playing career, Gulbis has appeared on such popular television programs as Celebrity Apprentice and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and starred in her own television show on The Golf Channel. Gulbis has also graced the pages of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, FHM, and she has her own calendar.

The Garden State Tour Pro Challenge will feature a full day of exciting activities at Shackamaxon. The day begins with an 18-hole celebrity golf outing featuring participants playing alongside professional sports alumni. Gulbis will meet and take photos with the outing participants.

At 11:30 am, Gulbis, along with a group of prestigious New Jersey PGA teaching professionals, will conduct a clinic and luncheon for golf enthusiasts from throughout the Garden State. Fans will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with Gulbis as she, and the pros, demonstrate a range of skills from driving through short game for players at all skill levels.

Clinic tickets are $65 and include lunch on the driving range and a gallery ticket to view the afternoon’s Garden State Tour Pro Challenge. Space is limited. Please contact Amanda Maloney at Shackmaxon Country Club at (908) 233-1300 to reserve your spot.

At 2 pm, the “main event” will take place as Natalie Gulbis and her professional teammate begin their head-to- head matches against the lucky New Jersey amateur qualifiers and their chosen amateur partner on Shackamaxon’s historic A.W. Tillinghast-designed masterpiece. Gallery tickets to view the action live at the afternoon’s Tour Pro Challenge are only $10 and may be purchased by calling (908) 233-1300 ext. 1203. Tickets will also be available on-site at the club on Sept 25.

David Werner Named Executive Chef at Shackamaxon Country Club

- Fresh, Seasonal Menus on Tap for Members and Guests -

Scotch Plains, N.J. (Feb. 13, 2013)—With a commitment to providing a distinctive and creative culinary experience for its members and guests Shackamaxon Country Club, the nearly century old private facility that boasts an A.W. Tillinghast designed golf course, announces the hiring of David Werner as executive chef.  Chef Werner’s penchant for working with organic, local and sustainable ingredients will be the cornerstone of Shackamaxon’s enhanced dining menus that will include the classics as well as unique gourmet selections.

As executive chef, Werner will develop seasonal menus for the enjoyment of Shackamaxon’s members and guests and will work with clubhouse manager David Ruas to provide a superior member experience.

Chef Werner’s background in both the study of environmental science at Dartmouth and of the arts at the Art Institute of Denver, are reflected in his creative,  “farm to table” approach to conceiving restaurant and catering menus.   Chef Werner began his culinary training in Denver and then moved on to sous chef positions at Aspen restaurant and Mio Sogno in Philadelphia.  In 2005, Werner was named executive chef of the highly-rated Mompou Tapas Bar in Newark, N.J.  His passion for what he calls ‘cultural comfort food’ was cultivated while serving as consulting executive chef at Market Restaurant in Montclair and was further developed when he introduced the “farm to table” dining concept, with bi-weekly menu changes, at Commissary Restaurant in Tappan, NY.

In addition to his restaurant experience, Chef Werner developed an enjoyment of creating innovative culinary experiences for large functions and weddings while working with the Glazier Group in Manhattan and the South City Group in New Jersey. Most recently he served as executive chef at Celebrate at Snug Harbor, a renowned wedding venue that is owned by Landmark Hospitality.

“David is a great fit for our growing membership at Shackamaxon,” said club co-owner Warren Leeds.  “His passion and commitment to sourcing the finest local ingredients will translate into fresh, seasonal menu offerings, and his proven leadership skills will bring the dining experience at Shackamaxon to the next level.”

Shackamaxon Country Club offers four unique venues for dining and cocktails exclusively for members and guests:  Tilly’s Turn, offering casual, pub-style food; The Grill Room, featuring menus that change daily based on the quality of products available in the market that day; The Outdoor Terrace, where one can enjoy dinner and drinks in a picturesque setting overlooking the golf course; and the 1916 Bar, serving chef-inspired cocktails and its own “bar-bite” menu.

Catering events, including Weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, social and corporate functions are OPEN to non-member guests, who will be dazzled by the culinary partnership between Chef Werner and Ome Caterers, New Jersey’s No. 1 Private Caterer (NJ Biz).   The elegant Grand Ballroom, that boasts new carpet and draperies, accommodates up to 300 guests with multiple configurations to suit the size and goal of any event.

Shackamaxon offers a variety of membership options. To learn more, contact Director of Membership David Miniman at (908) 233-1300 ext. 1230.  To learn more about weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and other banquet events, please contact Catering Sales Manager Ellen Sherry at (908) 233-1300, ext.  1222.
